What's Sumeru?

Sumeru is one of the seven regions in Teyvat, it is known as the centre of knowledge and is home to the well-renowned Sumeru Academia. It is the nation that worships Lesser Lord Kusanali, the Dendro Archon. She's the youngest among the Seven.

The city of scholars located in the west-central part of Teyvat. A fantastical nation of both lush rainforest and barren desert, where countless fruits of wisdom grow and are buried. Whether Travelers travel from afar through the forest to reach the academy city or delve deep into the desert to discover the historical ruins of the red desert, a wealth of valuable knowledge awaits them here.

Sumeru's landscape features both deserts and forests. Sumeru is based on India, Middle Eastern Countries and Egypt. When Sumeru was added, the dendro element was also added. Before Sumeru, no playable characters used the element and the only elemental reaction with dendro enemies was burning. The region is huge, making it hard to explore, but also features a lot of elements that make exploring easier. The archon quest is also entertaining.

Culture

  • Sumeru's name may also be derived from Sumer, the earliest known civilization located in lower Mesopotamia, which was known as Šumeru in the Akkadian language.
  • Sumeru music is a mix of both South Asian(esp. Indian Hindustani classical music) and Middle-Eastern music. In some areas, Yoga music is also played. The desert region is mostly based on ancient Egypt and so is the music.
  • People in Sumeru value rationality and wisdom, and many adults in Sumeru do not have dreams - it's something they are proud of. Knowledge is managed as a resource through ¨ a device known as the Akasha system, which is powered by the Gnosis of the previous Dendro Archon, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. The people of Sumeru frequently used to use their Akasha Terminals to find information, and essentially every adult has one; children do not.
  • Wealth is usually determined by the amount of Sumpter Beasts one owns. Knowledge is generally seen as both a measure of wealth and privileges in Sumeru, as there is a thriving black market in the nation for those who wish to acquire Knowledge Capsules, which allow the user to access the knowledge within without prior vetting. Other traded goods include crocodile produces, spices and essential oils for beauty products.
  • Port Ormos is Sumeru's main port, where foreigners from other nations come to buy and sell goods.
  • Education can take an extremely long time at Sumeru Akademiya. Many of the greatest scholars and geniuses of Teyvat have studied or taught at the Akademiya, and it is considered one of the most prestigious institutions in the world.
  • They are also known for their mastery of magic and alchemy, with many powerful sorcerers and alchemists hailing from the region.
  • Sumeru cuisine generally revolves around spicy foods, especially curry. The forests and deserts of Sumeru also contain many edible flowers, mushrooms, fruits and nuts, which are used in their cuisine.
  • Sumeru's local specialty wine is frigid snake wine.
  • The Akademiya governs Sumeru and handles much of the daily affairs of the nation.

  • Lore

Ingame Sumeru story line exists as a prologue that consists of three acts: Act I: The Outlander Who Caught the Wind, Act II: For a Tomorrow Without Tears, Act III: Song of the Dragon and Freedom

When you enter the region, you'll meet a researcher known as Haypasia. After meeting Tighnari, he tells you that Irminsul is the world tree that contains all the wisdom, and it has recently been corrupted. This corruption is the reason for the appearance of Withering Zone and diseases like Eleazar. We head over to Sumeru City to meet Lesser Lord Kusanali. There, we'll go to Port Ormos and meet Dori to get the Divine Capsule that can help you. The next day, you'll spend a good time with Dunyarzad at the Subzeruz Festival. Towards the end, the Grand Sage from the Akademiya will prevent Nilou from performing the Dance of Subzeruz. It turns out that we're in a repetitive dream of some sort where we're stuck on the same day of the Subzeruz Festival. After multiple attempts at stopping the Samsara, you're finally able to do it with the help of Nahida a.k.a. Lesser Lord Kusanali by asking Nilou to perform her dance. Soon after the end of Samsara, you set to learn more about the Akademiya's plan. All of your plans are stopped by the notorious Dottore, he has control over the Akademiya and the Akasha. Haypasia seems to have connected with the divine gaze, but the God who has control over her mind is Scaramouche himself. During this time, you see Nahida captured in a Dendro cage, and Scaramouche preparing for something below it. The Traveler connects the dots and finds out that the Akademiya is trying to make their own god, just because they never believed in the ruling of Lesser Lord Kusanali. You band together with Alhaitham, Cyno, Candace, and Dehya to solve the mystery of the missing protectors of the Aaru Village. It turns out that King Deshret couldn't control his power, and he was the reason for the corruption of Irminsul. Meanwhile, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata used all of her power to remove the negative effects on Irminsul and the people of Sumeru. While doing this, she loses a lot of her power and turns into a child. At this point, you connect the dots and find out that Lesser Lord Kusanali is none other than Rukkhadevata herself. The God that the Akademiya disowned for so long is the God they loved all this time. The Traveler decides to bring about justice and attempt to ruin the Fatui's notorious plan. Tighnari will mention that Dottore came to meet him, and tried to take Haypasia away. After following them to the boat, the Traveler realizes that it was all a ruse, and Haypasia and Tighnari are in danger. After making sure that Haypasia is safe, the Traveler gets confronted by Scaramouche's shadow. The sixth Harbinger mentions that he took over Haypasia's consciousness, and he knows everything about their plan. We meet up with everyone at the Grand Bazaar. We head into the lion's den, the Akademiya itself, with Alhaitham. Things don't go as planned as the Grand Sage Azar will see you coming and confront the Traveler and Alhaitham. Alhaitham consumes the Divine Knowledge Capsule and rushes at Azar. Although, his attack is unsuccessful and the plan fails. The Traveler is tasked with waking up Nahida's consciousness. It turns out that Alhaitham didn't fail after all, as his plan was to switch one of the knowledge capsules on Azar's table, and not actually attack him. The soldiers go right past Nilou in an attempt to capture Nahida. When Azar learns of what happened, he rushes to the Sanctuary only to be confronted by Cyno and Nahida. Nahida takes you through a domain filled with Fatui where they were keeping Scaramouche as they tried to make him a god. While attempting to defeat the boss, Nahida will borrow the wisdom of the entirity of Sumeru. You defeat Scaramouche, Nahida will get the Electro Gnosis and use it to awaken the final memory of Greater Lord Rukkhadevata. In the final memory, the Traveler and Nahida will finally meet Rukkhadevata, and she'll reveal that she was the only god who didn't go to the Khaenri'ah Cataclysm. She had to stay back and stop the pollution from the Forbidden Knowledge. Eventually, she realized that the corruption from Forbidden Knowledge had entered her consciousness through Irminsul, and the only way was to detach the purest branch from herself. Nahida is the purest branch, and she has to remove Rukkhadevata from Irminsul to save it. When you get back to the real world, you realize that everyone has forgotten about Rukkhadevata, except the Traveler. As the Traveler learns another new thing about them, a sound makes them and Paimon unconscious, and Dottore enters the scene. As the second harbinger attempts to threaten Nahida to get the Gnosis, she threatens him back by saying that she'll destroy the Gnosis and awaken the Heavenly Principles. Nahida instead negotiates with him and makes him delete all of his other versions in exchange for the Electro Gnosis. She also exchanges the Dendro Gnosis for important information from the harbinger after he reveals that the skies of Teyvat are fake.

The Sumeru story playthrough takes around 30 hours.

    Scaramouche

With Scaramouche, you venture deep into the heart of Irminsul to find information on your twin, but the God of Wisdom has different plans. She shows Scaramouche what actually happened years ago in Inazuma, and how he was betrayed by The Doctor, not his friend Niwa. After learning this, Wanderer decides to remove himself from Irminsul just like Rukkhadevata because he thought that would give Niwa another chance at life. Although, that didn't exactly happen. All the events that happened in the past stayed, but the characters involved with them changed their roles. After a bit, the Traveler remembers when Rukkhadevata said that no one can truly delete themselves from Irminsul. And that's when we meet Wanderer, the new incarnation of Scaramouche. For the rest of the quest, Nahida and Traveler venture through Wanderer's past as he gets his memories back. Now, the world doesn't remember the existence of Scaramouche. Although Wanderer has all of his memories back, he intends to help Nahida and the Traveler in future endeavors. This is the first time one of the Fatui Harbingers has sided with the Traveler.

    Archon war

Through without clear evidence, it is suggested that unlike other nations, the three God-Kings: King Deshret, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata, and Goddess of Flowers peacefully shared the throne with each other. However, after multiple events that lead to the death of the Goddess of Flowers and King Deshret, Greater Lord Rukkhadevata was titled as the sole Archon of Sumeru. After Lesser Lord Kusanali erased Rukkhadevata from the Irminsul, the world now knew Kusanali as the Dendro Archon that arose from the Archon War.

    Aranara

    Who are they?

The Aranara are a race of plantlike forest spirits who reside in Vanarana in northern Sumeru. They are encountered in the World Quest series Aranyaka.

    Story

They were led by Greater Lord Rukkhadevata — whom they called "Queen Aranyani" — up until her disappearance. After Lesser Lord Kusanali erased the memory of Greater Lord Rukkhadevata from the Irminsul during Where the Boat of Consciousness Lies, like any Teyvatian creatures, the Aranara also forgot her as Queen Aranyani, believing instead that they are the children of the current Dendro Archon, whom they refer to as The Lord of Verdure. The Aranara have lived in Sumeru at Old Vanarana until the Cataclysm occurred. Many Aranara fought fiercely against the invaders of the Abyss, but they were forced to abandon their old home and made a new home at Vanarana. At some point prior to the events of the game, the Traveler's Sibling met with the Aranara, who referred to them as the "Nara Varuna." They helped them with the Varuna Contraption prior to their departure, after which they told them to expect another golden-haired human who would give them even better memories. The Aranara do not normally trust most humans, especially adults, though they befriend children and are often referred to as a myth as no adult had ever seen them with their own eyes before.

    Aranaras abilities

All Aranara are capable of hiding themselves from the human eye, although they are only seen by children, most likely due to the fact that they dream, whereas adults do not. Being attuned with nature, Aranara are also capable of communicating with plants, especially fungi. Aranara love memories, although some of them are prone to forgetting quite easily, so some Aranara give flowers to their friends so they can remember them if they meet again. Every Aranara has their own Ararakalari, which can be used to fight enemies, restrain or suppress their strength, teleport across great distances in an instant and even block several areas off. Every Aranara has their own tune, and every tune is different, so the Aranara know who's home. Each tune can be played by the Traveler with the Vintage Lyre. There are a total of 64 such Aranara spread throughout various areas of Dharma Forest, Sumeru.
